Question 5

Liked my colour scheme & the fact my models look directly at the camera, other factors they liked that i might of non mention would of been, ' i like your contents page space out your texts equally ' they liked because it carried on my formal theme,however it was not spaced out equally which may of made it look disorganized and less appealing to my audience.

Audience Feed Back

I also took on some of the audience’s feedback such as;

What could I improve?

‘Your DPS seems to be an A4 piece; perhaps you redo it as an A3 with a larger image?;

‘You could improve on the layout of your DPS because the image of Victor (the guy on b      the couch’ with the saxophone) looks a bit stretched horizontally and you could have also made the DPS an A3 sheet or paper instead of an A4 sheet of paper’

The audience feedback allowed me to analysis my magazine and to see the features they liked  and also features they may have come across  unclear. I was able to redo parts in order to help attract my  audience however some people stated my audience was clear and certain factor like having a white model did not demine my magazine.

Audience said;

 ‘I think that your Black and white colour scheme will attract potential readers to your magazine even if they’re not a part of your target audience and this is because of the fact that most magazines are really colourful or dark (black colours) and your unique colour scheme will defiantly stand out. You target audience will defiantly be attracted to your music magazine for this reason as well.’

‘By representing Jazz, you are able to attract Jazz fans. It is quite formal; this would be appreciated by the audience.’

 This is positive feedback as the targets I was looking to achieve such as keeping a formality tone in my magazine have been achieved

Question 7

Question 7.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I learnt the importance of having a colour scheme and how it can influence people to buy your magazine and, also how crucial it is to link the colour scheme to your target audience as this will help persuade and encourage them to pick up your magazine.I believed I significantly improved due to my case study’s, I was able to look through various magazine and see the methods they used to appeal to their target audience.  Arsenal using red as it links to their emblem and Downbeat changed there’s each issue but still maintain a general colour scheme and kept it basic. Looking back at my audience Feedback I can see how much I improved such as;

‘I think that your Black and white colour scheme will attract potential readers to your magazine   even if they’re not a part of your target audience and this is because of the fact that most magazines are really colourful or dark (black colour  and your unique colour scheme will defiantly stand out. You target audience will defiantly be attracted to your music magazine for this reason as well.

If you look at my bar code on my College task is stands out and affects the quality of my image I learnt that the placement of features can be instrumental when producing a magazine in my music magazine. I choose a more acceptable bar code and also change the side, I did not want to crowd my text into one corner of my page so I decided to spread it out.

My typography also improved if you look at the my college magazine where I used a variety of fonts in came  across tacky, I realized keeping the same font and using standard capitalization on certain text is extremely important as it allows you to make a subtle impact which was important in my music magazine as it was in black and white. Here is some of the feed back below

' Looking at your college magazine your music magazine i can tell that you have improved tremendously in your editing skills because you gained more experience, and that is the reason why your images, layout of text and images and also your masterhead are incredible.'

My photography improved as we used more advance cameras and hired out studio’s also my choice of models was better. As I had the opportunity to do a case study I was able to look in detail to see who would feature in my magazine and I chose the best person in my college who fit that description. This is why, my target audience is easy to establish on my music magazine whereas, if you look at the college magazine my colour's and font could have been targets at a variety of audiences and was not specific.

As you can see the layout of magazine has changed. I have equally spaced out the text also used more images an images which relate to my content. If you look at my college magazine;

. I've named it contents page
. Not gave any headings
. Poor Camera (Bad sizing )
. Left  Blank spaces
. Different colour shades ( Green )

The reason I improved my college magazine was because I was able to look back at details where I went wrong and compare them with my case studies to see where I went wrong.  The main reasons are shown above so, in my music magazine I followed the structure of other stimulus and whereas the college magazine  was just made from scratch with no focus or guidance in my music magazine my aim was to keep it formal. My images has to create a mise en scene so they kept the Jazz feel throughout my magazine, heading & subheadings  where put in bold to make them stand out, we used more advance camera's (Cannon's) and I tried to balance out my text and imagery so I would not leave any blank spots. I also made sure I used the same colour of black through the text.

First Draft & Final Draft Development & Comparison

The reasons why I changed my magazine was because, I felt the masthead did not stand out and attract my audience. Through my research task I found out how significant the lower left third in a magazine is as, the buyers see the lower left third, first when looking at Newsstands in shop. This is the reason why I changed for a more eye capturing masthead which I believe is more effective.

I also enlarged my main cover line as this was one of the key features in my magazine and I did not emphasis this enough on my first magazine.

We did not get to use all these images unfortunately, but these some of my best photo’s that I believed also captured my target audience, I used my main model in most of these pictures as he had the biggest feature

Magazine Progess

My progress is going good so far I’m developing my front cover trying to keep  my black and white my colour scheme, reason I used an image with an instrument in is because, I believe this makes my generic conventions clear, as this feature will allow them to understand is a music magazine.

Beginning Stage of designing my Dps

Today's lesson i began designing my first page of the dps i used other stimulus to help structure my dps. I got inspiration from a magazine called  ' ARISE '

Progress report (1)

Today’s lesson I began to develop my magazine ensuring my layout was correct. I changed around the layout from my original design reason being, when creating the magazine I felt this layout would connect better with my audience overall I believe this lesson was successful.

Magazine Proposal Layouts

During my research, I was looking at popular magazine and the structures they would use in order to layout there page (Dps & Front Cover) I had a rough sketch of how I believed my magazine would be structured, I’m thinking of laying out my cover like this however, this is not my final decision.

Magazine proposal Video& Feedback

FeedBack

Don’t use 1 image in the contents page.
Like the name but it doesn’t stand out, you can make it better by giving it a slogan saying Jazz.

Need to design a better Masthead.

Magazine Proposal

Magazine Proposal

The tittle of my magazine is going to be called  Giant Step reason being Giant step is a famous Jazz tune performed by John Coltrane , Giant Steps is the fifth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane as leader which was released in 1960 many of its tracks have become practice templates for jazz saxophonists  , he is a significant figure in the Jazz world , and I want  Giant steps to become a successful magazine and take giant steps in becoming the dominant force hence the reason, I created the correlation between the two and used this as my Masthead

Artist I’m going to include

Young Artist – Femi Koleoso

A talented drummer, who plays the drums for tomorrow’s warriors which have a big set-up in the English jazz scene, he is extremely gifted therefore I believe he will be a good feature in my magazine.

Experienced Artist - Miles Davis

He’s and American jazz musician, trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, he will have the main feature in my jazz magazine; he also played alongside john Coltrane

Others

My Magazine will include many jazz musicians from old school to what’s present now, different months will feature a different instrument in the jazz industry, we will cover the same instrument twice and we will also do other specials when we focus on groups

What makes my magazine different?

My magazine is going to express the true meaning of jazz from the routes of where it all began , is going to be different as we are going to adapt the jazz culture and  give young and extremely talented individuals to feature and to give them a spotlight Colum in our jazz magazine which will allow them to shine and to take there Giant step in the jazz industry.

Magazine Newsstand Task

Distribution of Magazine

1.       Sale & Return

This relies on distribution, of the magazine, they give a set number to a retail outlet for example; I give 20 copies of my magazine to WH smith and only 15 getting sold, they’ll have 5 left and those 5 are returned with no cost to retailer, however this method can be extremely wasteful and expensive for the distribution.

2.        Online  distribution

Online distribution is by far the biggest method of distribution and most magazine are slowly diverting to the online magazine because you can have subscriber which is monthly money, which ensures you will be getting an income each month, you can also give those subscribers perks such as early new magazine before they sold in stores which will make others buyers interested in becoming a monthly subscriber.

(A subscriber is someone, who pay’s monthly by debit card for magazine, and they are sent to their emails)

3.           Postal distribution

Postal subscriptions are usually provided by large companies as they are guaranteed a sale and similarly to online distribution they also give away ‘free b’s’ clubs like Arsenal do monthly magazine and send them through post and those magazines can become collectors’ items, this is an expensive method and if you do not have the right financial income it could affect your business.

4.        Direct distribution

Direct marketing means selling products by dealing directly with consumers rather than through a second person or other various outlets , direct distribution is a popular method as  there are many advantages such as Higher profit potential   and is always current , so this allows you to adapt the magazine still be able to sell it to consumers

My Magazine

Firstly I really enjoyed this assignment as we was able to go out and see for ourselves the competition and hidden battles magazines companies go through enable to make there’s stand out from other magazines;  also the importance of the the low third and how if it’s not effective, you will not catch the consumers eye. When I first went to the shops to look for music magazines it surprised me how little variety there was and the dominance of the rock genres, most magazines and books stores are closing down due to online distribution and other methods which are more practical for

customers.

My magazine is going to be Jazz magazine therefore I do not want to go down the sale and return routes as I cannot afford to waste company’s is also bad for the environment and I want my magazine to be fulland with other competition from hip and rock that would be a challenging path, so I decided to choose postal distribution as I can have monthly issue which will be delivered straight to their doors. I would have an online website which will work in partnership; I will also give my postal subscribers perks posters for jazz artist who will be featured in our magazine, and put dates for when there performing next.

Induction Task Evaluation

Induction Task Evaluation

Introduction

In this assignment we were assigned to create a double page spread about the disadvantages and advantages of file sharing. I personally believe it was a good induction as I got a feel for the subject. I was able to identify weakness I may come across in the future; also being able to have a feel with the different types of programme we were going to use was extremely useful. In this evaluation I’m going to analyse myself with help from peers.

Research Skills – Strengths and Weaknesses

The first source I used to gather information was from the article newsbeat, I annotated & highlighted the parts of the article that I thought was useful, and then expanded my point of view in my article. The information I found most useful from newsbeat was the information regarding Napster however, some of the information was quite dated therefore, I had to look for more recent sources. I found it easier to gather information from articles from magazines and newspaper as the sources I use are reliable and information is simple and low lexis so I can interpret them into my own words the source I tend to use are;

Guardian

Music Magazines (Vibe)

BBC

Newsbeat

One of my weakness I found most challenging was finding reliable sources from the internet I find it hard to separate good sources from bad source, with this task; I manage to get help from my teachers who helped feed me some information and ideas of website I can youse, eventually my computer research skills improved and I was able to pick out key information through doing some Independent online research.

Journalistic and Writing Skills – Strengths and Weakness

In my double page spread, I tried to capture the younger reader’s attention, my audience was targeted for u21 the majority of my grammar was low lexis however, when relating to facts and important information I changed my tone and used mid lexis, this was to keep the reader interested. My purpose was to inform them and I believe I was successful, Secondly  I used 2nd person Pro nouns like “ you “ as I believe this connects with the readers and  it makes the article more personal and they feel like they will benefit and learn new information through reading my article.

InDesign Skills Strengths & Weakness

It’s fair to say my weakness outweighs my strengths, this was my first time using this software and I have minimal experience using other computer designing programmes. At first I found it hard to input pictures without them being pixlised,  I then realised I needed hi res pictures , it took me a long time to understand the different symbols , and I’m still learning now , however I am more comfortable and I  believe I can produce a better piece of work now as I have more of a understanding, I still struggle with getting ideas in my head on the computer but it’s a working progress, In my design I learnt how to fade the background picture which is a useful tool.

Web Publishing

At first setting up ours blogs was taking a long time because of the college firewall system was not set –up probably however, Web publishing is a really good way of keeping on top of your work everyone uses phone, and we can update and upload work through our phones, when it runs smoothly it will be fast and not be time consuming and I like the fact you get constructive criticism feedback, via social network sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter.

Audience Feed Back

Viktor; It’s really good, however the colour schemes make it harder to read

The images is good very effective

Should if highlighted more words blue to make it stand out

Ruce; It’s really good, however my text is hard to read

The image in the bottom left is effective

It reads really well
Specific Targets for improvement

·         Improve InDesign skills

·         Read more magazines

·         Improve research skills

Even though I only have 3 targets, there’s depth in them target and loads of areas for me to improve, as each lesson I’m learning new skills

 Photoshop

In today’s lesson, we started to used Photoshop; it is my first time using Photoshop so everything I learnt was a new skill such as;

1 How to line up your page with a ruler and the importance of it

 2 How to open my document and making sure I change the re set to international blogger which gives me an A4 Page, which  then  enables me to add text or an image
3 How to put my masthead, behind my image

Other Magazines

In my case studies, I used Jazz magazine when doing my research as I would be comparing and contrasting my magazine to theirs however, during this process  of developing my  magazine I used these magazine as well as they all captured my attention.
 The image in Arise captured me straight away and in the Arsenal magazine they had the children’s section so I decided to read it and see how they adapt to all of their audiences as, I will be appealing to a dual audience with mine.

The stylist magazine had various ways in capturing their audience. I personally did not think any would link well with my audience so I did not use any of their methods.
